Toilet Plumbing

Repair the Fault or Plan a Suitable Replacement

A running toilet is often a cistern-valve or seal problem, while water around the base may involve the pan connection, supply or surrounding floor. A blockage can be local to the toilet or part of a wider drain problem.

For replacement, share the existing toilet and selected model where possible. Set-out, water connection, floor condition and access all need to match before installation proceeds.

Signs the Toilet Needs Attention

A small cistern fault can waste water, while leaks and overflows need quicker attention

Water Runs Constantly

The cistern continues filling or water flows into the bowl between flushes.

Weak or Unreliable Flush

The button, valve or water level is not operating as intended.

Water Around the Base

Stop using the toilet if the leak may contain wastewater or the floor feels soft.

The Toilet Keeps Blocking

Repeat blockages may involve the fixture, pan connection or main drain.

FAQs

Questions about toilet repairs

Practical answers before you arrange the work

Why does my toilet keep running?
Common causes include a worn inlet valve, outlet seal, float adjustment or flush mechanism. The cistern needs to be checked to identify the failed component.
Should I repair or replace the toilet?
Repair often makes sense for a sound suite with a replaceable cistern fault. Replacement may be more practical when the pan is cracked, parts are unavailable or the fixture has repeated problems.
What details are needed for a new toilet?
Send photos of the existing suite and water point plus the model or specification of the proposed replacement. The set-out and available space must be confirmed.
What should I do if the toilet overflows?
Stop flushing and using nearby connected fixtures. If safe, isolate the toilet water supply and call for urgent help.
What needs checking before a bidet seat or spray is installed?
The product, water connection and required backflow protection must suit the installation. Some products have approved integral protection; others need a separate device. Ask us to check the WaterMark and backflow requirements before buying. Electric seats may also need suitable power arranged. NSW plumbing guidance on bidet installations.
